Palantir Technologies Inc. finds itself in a familiar, yet precarious, position. Its software is deeply embedded in critical military operations, its commercial business is exploding, and its stock is under pressure. As the company approaches its first-quarter earnings report on May 4, the disconnect between its operational reality and market sentiment has never been more stark.
The cornerstone of its government business was recently fortified. The U.S. Department of Defense has officially classified Palantir's "Maven Smart System" as a formal Record Program. This designation, secured via a Pentagon memorandum, locks the platform into multi-year military budgets. Maven integrates data from over 150 sources—including satellites, drones, and radar systems—using algorithms to identify battlefield targets in minutes rather than hours. Its capabilities are being tested at scale; during "Operation Epic Fury" in early 2026, the system reportedly processed 1,000 targets in the first 24 hours. Palantir's Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar has called this the first large-scale military operation primarily directed by artificial intelligence.
Financially, this defense relationship is substantial. The original Maven contract was expanded for 2025 to a value of up to $1.3 billion. Concurrently, the U.S. Army established a long-term umbrella agreement facilitating procurements worth up to $10 billion.
Yet the growth story extends far beyond the Pentagon. Palantir has accelerated its revenue growth for ten consecutive quarters. In the fourth quarter, total revenue surged 70% to $1.4 billion. The U.S. commercial segment was particularly explosive, with revenue skyrocketing 137% to $507 million. For the full year, management is targeting total revenue of approximately $7.2 billion, representing growth of about 61%. The U.S. commercial business alone is projected to more than double, aiming for over $3.14 billion.
Despite these formidable fundamentals, the stock has lost roughly 20% year-to-date and trades about 30% below its all-time high of $207 from autumn 2025. Market observers attribute the decline to a broad rotation away from technology stocks. The recent valuation leaves no room for error. Shares are currently trading at approximately 220 times trailing twelve-month earnings and about 112 times forward earnings, implying the market has already priced in a profit doubling this year.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?
Wall Street's view is nuanced. Analysts at Morgan Stanley recently stated Palantir has a "strong setup" heading into the quarterly results. Meanwhile, Mizuho analyst Gregg Moskowitz reaffirmed an "Outperform" rating on April 14 but trimmed his price target from $195 to $185, citing a recalibration of valuation ahead of the earnings print and a better near-term risk/reward profile in other software names.
All eyes are now on the May 4 report after the market closes. The company's own guidance sets a high bar: first-quarter revenue is expected around $1.53 billion with adjusted operating income of approximately $872 million. A key metric investors will scrutinize is the conversion rate from Palantir's "Bootcamp" strategy, where potential customers trial the software. The pace at which these trial users become paying clients serves as a leading indicator for future revenue sustainability.
With the stock hovering around $148, the extreme valuation multiples mean even a slight miss on the $1.53 billion revenue target could extend the recent correction. The company's powerful defense status and blistering commercial growth are firmly established; the coming days will test whether its market valuation can hold the line.
