A critical regulatory approval in Europe and a major hardware milestone have combined to break Tesla's eight-week losing streak, setting a charged atmosphere for its first-quarter earnings report this week. The stock closed the week up approximately 12.5% at 329.90 euros, marking a decisive shift in sentiment ahead of the financial update.

The most significant structural catalyst emerged from the Netherlands. On April 10, the Dutch vehicle authority RDW granted the first regulatory approval for Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system on public roads within the European Union. This authorization, based on the UN Regulation 171 standard, allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel under suitable conditions while remaining legally responsible. The approval followed a test program covering over 1.6 million kilometers on EU roads and more than 13,000 customer trips. Crucially, through mutual recognition, all EU member states can adopt this Dutch approval nationally without a full re-test, paving the way for a potential bloc-wide rollout as early as this summer.

Simultaneously, a breakthrough in Tesla's silicon ambitions provided a mid-week boost. CEO Elon Musk confirmed the completion of the tape-out for the next-generation Autopilot chip, AI5, meaning its final design is ready for production preparation. A single AI5 chip is slated to deliver about five times the usable computing power of the current dual AI4 setup, with high-volume production targeted for 2027. Musk also noted that development on AI6 and Dojo3 is already underway.

This technical progress was mirrored by a shift in analyst opinion. UBS upgraded Tesla from "Sell" to "Neutral," assigning a $352 price target. While not a ringing endorsement, the move represented a visible change in tone after months of skepticism. Not all were convinced, however. JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman pointed to a gap of roughly 50,000 units between production and deliveries as a warning sign for demand weakness and margin pressure.

The operational picture for Q1 2026 presents a mixed bag. Tesla delivered approximately 358,000 vehicles, missing consensus estimates ranging from 365,000 to 370,000 units. Production was notably stronger at over 408,000 vehicles, suggesting growing inventory. In contrast, the energy business performed solidly, with 8.8 GWh of energy storage deployed during the quarter. Observers at Giga Texas also spotted about 14 Cybercab units without steering wheels, pedals, or side mirrors, indicating the Robotaxi project is moving from prototype to pre-production phases.

All eyes now turn to Wednesday, April 22, when Tesla reports after the market closes. Analysts expect adjusted earnings per share of around $0.38 on revenue of approximately $22.7 billion, a significant jump from the $0.12 EPS reported in the year-ago period. Beyond the financials, investors will scrutinize updates on the planned Robotaxi service expansion to Dallas, Houston, and Phoenix in the first half of 2026. The capital expenditure plan, already exceeding $20 billion for 2026 excluding the planned Terafab AI data center, will also be a key focus. Trading about 21% below its 52-week high of 416.90 euros, Tesla's ability to sustain last week's recovery hinges on the details revealed this Wednesday evening.
