Plug Power Inc. shares recently surged to $2.92, a rally fueled by the company's strategic pivot toward powering artificial intelligence data centers. This shift represents a stark reinvention for the hydrogen specialist, aiming to capitalize on a sector whose U.S. electricity consumption is projected to jump from 4.3% in 2024 to 11.7% by 2030. The company's plan involves using hydrogen fuel cells to provide off-grid baseload and backup power for this new infrastructure.
Beneath this ambitious strategy lies a persistent and severe structural issue: shareholder dilution. Over the past decade, the number of outstanding shares has ballooned by approximately 700%. An investor from 2016 now holds just one-seventh of their original stake, with the share count rising about 50% in the last year alone. This dramatic erosion forms a critical backdrop to the company's latest growth narrative.
Financially, Plug Power is showing tentative signs of operational improvement. For the full fiscal year 2025, revenue reached roughly $710 million, a 13% year-over-year increase. More notably, the fourth quarter delivered a positive gross profit of $5.5 million, marking a gross margin of 2.4%. This contrasts sharply with a negative 122.5% gross margin in the same period a year prior, indicating the company's "Project Quantum Leap" cost-cutting initiative is having an effect.
To bolster its balance sheet, the company is monetizing assets. Plug Power has agreed to sell its "Project Gateway" site for a minimum of $132.5 million to Stream Data Centers. This transaction is part of a larger effort to unlock over $275 million in near-term liquidity. The company currently reports approximately $368.5 million in unrestricted cash.
Leadership under new CEO Jose Luis Crespo has outlined a clear roadmap targeting positive EBITDA by 2026, a positive operating result by 2027, and full profitability by 2028. Revenue is projected to climb above $1 billion by that time. However, the competitive landscape is formidable. Rival Bloom Energy has set a high bar with a data center fuel cell supply agreement valued at up to $2.65 billion with American Electric Power. Alternative technologies like small modular nuclear reactors are also gaining traction in the same segment.
External pressures are mounting alongside this competition. New U.S. tariffs of 20% on European electrolyzers and Chinese components are squeezing Plug Power's supply chain, expected to pressure margins in the short term as the company transitions to domestic suppliers. Furthermore, the stock faces significant skepticism from short-sellers, with roughly 24% of its free float currently sold short. The company is also contending with an investor class-action lawsuit alleging management misrepresented the prospects for a multi-billion dollar loan from the U.S. Department of Energy.
On the operational front for its new focus, Plug Power has taken concrete steps. It has a non-binding letter of intent with an unnamed U.S. data center developer and aims to monetize power rights in New York and another U.S. location. Separately, the company announced in March 2026 a plan to bid up to 250 megawatts of hydrogen-based power capacity into the PJM Interconnection grid, targeting long-term contracts with hyperscalers and utilities.
Analyst sentiment remains divided. While Susquehanna recently raised its price target to $2.75 in April, it maintained a "Neutral" rating. The consensus among 30 analysts sits at a median target of $3.64, but the three most recent assessments from Susquehanna, Jefferies, and Wells Fargo average just $2.18—approximately 25% below the recent trading price.
The upcoming quarterly report in May 2026 serves as a crucial test. It must demonstrate whether the fragile margin improvement can withstand tariff pressures and if Crespo's milestones are achievable. Ultimately, without signed contracts in the data center sector, Plug Power's high-stakes pivot remains a bet on a future it hopes its diluted shareholders will still own a meaningful piece of.
