After more than a year of decline, positive signals are emerging from Europe for the electric vehicle manufacturer. Investors found reason for cautious optimism this week, driven by rising vehicle registration figures and regulatory progress for its driver-assistance software. However, a strengthening Chinese rival and lowered global delivery forecasts present ongoing headwinds.
Regulatory Progress Provides a Catalyst
Significant news arrived from the software division. Tesla's European branch has concluded final vehicle testing for its FSD (Supervised) assistance system in the Netherlands. Test vehicles reportedly covered over 1.6 million kilometers on European roads during this phase.
Although the anticipated approval date from the Dutch vehicle authority RDW has shifted from March 20 to April 10, a market launch is drawing closer. Company management anticipates an EU-wide regulatory green light by summer 2026 if the RDW approval is secured. This development helped support the share price, which advanced 1.78 percent to 338.25 euros.
European Registrations Show a Rebound
The improved sentiment is partly attributed to recent data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). In February, Tesla's registrations across the EU, the UK, and EFTA states increased by 11.8 percent year-over-year. Isolating the EU market shows even stronger growth of 29.1 percent, equating to 13,740 units. Country-level data reveals substantial gains in several key markets:
- France: 3,715 registrations, a 55 percent increase
- Norway: 1,210 units, up 75.6 percent
- Spain: Growth of 74 percent
- Germany: A 59 percent rise
This rebound must be viewed in context. European sales had dropped sharply in the first quarter of 2025 due to production line changes for the updated Model Y. Furthermore, competitive pressure is intensifying rapidly. Chinese automaker BYD boosted its European registrations by an impressive 162 percent in February to nearly 18,000 vehicles, surpassing Tesla in absolute volume for the month.
Global Delivery Forecasts Cast a Shadow
Despite the regional strength in Europe, the upcoming global delivery numbers for Q1 are a concern. Analysts at UBS recently reduced their estimates to approximately 345,000 units. This would represent an 18 percent sequential decline, attributed to weaker demand in the core U.S. and Chinese markets.
Compounding these challenges, internal data suggests the brand is experiencing a loss of consumer trust compared to established manufacturers like Toyota or Honda. The company is scheduled to release its quarterly results on April 28, 2026, which will provide concrete details on its current earnings performance and global margins.
