Investors in Kontron have experienced a turbulent period following the release of the technology group's 2025 annual report. Despite posting robust annual figures, the company's forward guidance triggered a significant sell-off, with shares plummeting as much as 15% in a single trading session. Although there has been a partial recovery since, the equity remains approximately 20% below its value at the start of the year.
A Mixed Financial Picture: Strong Profits Amid Revenue Dip
Kontron's reported financial performance for 2025 presents a contrasting image. Profitability metrics showed substantial improvement. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) advanced by nearly 24% to reach €237.4 million. Net income saw an even more dramatic surge, jumping 55.6% to €141.1 million. Conversely, revenue experienced a slight contraction, falling to €1.61 billion. Management attributed this decline to portfolio adjustments.
The market's concern stems not from these historical results but from the outlook for the coming year. For 2026, Kontron has provided guidance for an adjusted EBITDA of approximately €225 million, a figure that falls short of the €237.4 million achieved in 2025. This forecast is further weighed down by planned restructuring costs estimated at around €25 million, which will directly impact the bottom line.
Strategic Shift and Job Cuts Weigh on Sentiment
A major factor behind this cautious projection is a strategic overhaul within the company's GreenTec division. Kontron is implementing measures to streamline this business unit, focusing its efforts on more profitable product lines. As part of this consolidation, the group plans to eliminate up to 500 positions across its operations. Company leadership anticipates that these steps will enable the GreenTec segment to return to profitability by the fourth quarter of 2026.
Looking further ahead, Kontron maintains its ambitious medium-term targets. The company continues to aim for an EBITDA of about €420 million by the year 2030. On the top line, management is already projecting a return to growth in 2026, with revenue expected to land between €1.75 billion and over €1.8 billion.
Management Signals Confidence with Buyback
In tandem with its earnings release, Kontron's board announced a new share repurchase initiative. The program is authorized to acquire up to €50 million worth of the company's own stock. This move is widely interpreted as a signal that the executive team views the current share price as an attractive valuation. Whether this display of confidence is sufficient to fully restore investor trust will become clearer as the year progresses, particularly as the GreenTec division's turnaround plan approaches its critical phase.
