Alphabet Inc. is demonstrating that its most valuable assets might not be the ones powering its daily ad revenue. A strategic investment made over a decade ago is now commanding attention, with the company's $900 million stake in SpaceX from 2015 now estimated to be worth a staggering $100 billion. This revelation underscores the immense, often overlooked, value embedded within the tech giant's diverse portfolio.
This hidden treasure is part of a broader collection of strategic bets. Beyond SpaceX, Alphabet holds a 14% stake in AI startup Anthropic, into which it has invested over $3 billion. As of February 2026, Anthropic carried a valuation of $380 billion. The portfolio also includes significant positions in fintech leader Stripe, valued at $159 billion, and the autonomous driving unit Waymo, worth $126 billion. These holdings within the "Other Bets" segment represent a formidable reservoir of silent wealth that contributed to a recent 4.5% single-day share price gain as investors reassessed the company's total worth.
To fuel its future, Alphabet is embarking on an unprecedented capital expenditure cycle. For the 2026 fiscal year, the company plans investments between $175 and $185 billion, nearly double the $91 billion spent the previous year. A cornerstone of this spending is a long-term agreement with Broadcom for the development and supply of custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) through 2031. Furthermore, Anthropic is slated to gain access to 3.5 gigawatts of TPU computing power starting in 2027.
This aggressive spending is backed by robust financial performance. For the full year 2025, Alphabet reported revenue of $402.84 billion, a 15% year-over-year increase, with net income reaching $132.17 billion. The fourth quarter was particularly strong for Google Cloud, which saw revenue surge 48% to $17.66 billion, generating an operating profit of $5.31 billion. Earnings per share of $2.82 comfortably exceeded analyst expectations of $2.63.
A significant portion of this capital is flowing into global infrastructure, highlighted by a landmark project in India. Construction is set to begin on April 28, 2026, on a $15 billion data center complex in Andhra Pradesh. Being developed by Google subsidiary Raiden Infotech in partnership with Adani Infra, the one-gigawatt facility is scheduled for full operation by July 2028 and will become Alphabet's largest data center in Asia.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Alphabet?
However, this ambitious expansion does not come without headwinds. The massive planned expenditures, expected to reach around $180 billion for 2026, are projected to pressure margins and lead to negative free cash flow. Simultaneously, regulatory scrutiny is intensifying. Early in April, Turkey's competition authority launched a formal investigation into the billing practices of Google's advertising business, directly targeting the company's core revenue stream. In Europe, the ongoing pressures of the Digital Markets Act add another layer of complexity.
Market sentiment has reflected this mixed outlook. After sliding more than 20% from its February peak, Alphabet's stock recently regained some ground, climbing 3.31% to 271.50 EUR. Analyst opinions remain largely positive, with 61 buy recommendations against just 6 hold ratings, though some are adjusting targets. Wells Fargo recently lowered its price target from $397 to $361 while maintaining an "Overweight" rating, and Needham reaffirmed a $400 target.
With a Relative Strength Index hovering near 78, the stock is technically in overbought territory. Investors are now watching closely for the first-quarter 2026 results to see if the company's fundamental strength can justify its current valuation, while also monitoring the progress of the Indian mega-project and the unfolding regulatory investigations.
