Shares of Deutz AG, the Cologne-based engine manufacturer, experienced a pullback on Monday, shedding 2.54 percent to close at €10.37. This daily dip, however, stands in stark contrast to the equity's powerful longer-term performance, which has seen it gain roughly 57 percent over the past twelve months and more than 20 percent since the start of the year, ranking it among Germany's top industrial performers.
The company's operational results justify this strength. For the fourth quarter of 2025, Deutz doubled its earnings per share to €0.23, while revenue climbed approximately 7 percent to €543 million. Looking ahead, analysts project a full-year 2026 profit of €0.91 per share, placing the stock at a single-digit price-to-earnings ratio at its current level.
Beyond these fundamentals, Deutz is executing a profound strategic shift. Management has laid out an ambitious target to grow its defense division's revenue to around €300 million by 2030. This move is central to CEO Sebastian Schulte's plan to reduce the group's dependence on the volatile cycles of its traditional industrial and agricultural machinery business. The strategy is already bearing fruit; the defense unit posted revenue growth of about 15 percent in the 2025 fiscal year.
The division's growth is underpinned by concrete projects. Deutz currently supplies drive systems for Patriot air defense systems and armored vehicles. Its Ulm plant is slated for the assembly of "Gereon" ground drones from partner Arx Robotics, and a collaboration with Tytan Technologies focuses on propulsion for intercept drones and energy systems for launcher applications.
This defense push is part of a broader corporate ambition. By 2030, the group aims for total revenue of approximately €4 billion with an adjusted EBIT margin of 10 percent. For the upcoming 2026 financial year, guidance calls for sales between €2.3 and €2.5 billion and an EBIT margin of 6 to 8 percent.
Analysts see room for further appreciation. M.M. Warburg sets a price target of €12.90, while Kepler Cheuvreux targets €12.00. Berenberg is slightly more conservative at €11.00 but maintains a constructive view. The stock's recent consolidation, following a strong rally in April, has brought its 14-day Relative Strength Index to 36.5, indicating it is no longer in overbought territory.
A potential macroeconomic tailwind is emerging from the United States. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency has begun refunding tariffs deemed unlawful by the Supreme Court in February, with estimates suggesting up to $175 billion could flow back to affected companies. For an export-oriented manufacturer like Deutz with international supply chains and U.S. business, such a significant relief could improve cost structures across the capital goods sector.
Nevertheless, the share remains a volatile holding, with an annualized 30-day volatility reading near 59 percent. The upcoming first-quarter results, the next major data point, will be scrutinized for confirmation of the growth trajectory. The stock's 52-week high of €12.46 remains about 17 percent above the current price. Achieving the long-term defense revenue goal will hinge on scaling capacity in Ulm and successfully advancing partnerships to series production.
