Investors in BASF are preparing for a pivotal day at the end of the month. On April 30, the chemical giant will release its first-quarter 2026 results and hold its Annual General Meeting, where shareholders will vote on a proposed dividend of €2.25 per share. This dual event will test market confidence in the company's strategic direction amid persistent macroeconomic challenges.
The company's share price has been a standout performer, currently trading around €53.20. This marks a gain of nearly 19% since the start of the year, placing it among the strongest stocks in Germany's blue-chip DAX index. The price sits just 2.7% below its recent 52-week high of €54.70, reached in mid-April, and remains solidly above its 50-day moving average of €49.55.
This robust performance comes despite a cautious outlook from management. For the full year 2026, BASF has guided for EBITDA before special items to land between €6.2 billion and €7.0 billion. Even the upper end of this range falls short of the average analyst consensus of €7.02 billion. The company cites a weak European automotive and construction sector, alongside significant negative currency effects from a soft US dollar, which could dent operating profit by up to €200 million.
Parallel to managing these headwinds, BASF is advancing a major portfolio transformation. The company is moving forward with plans to spin off its agricultural solutions business. Shareholders at the upcoming meeting will vote on carving out this operational division into a new legal entity. The management's goal is to list a minority stake of this new company, BASF Beteiligungs SE, on the Frankfurt stock exchange by 2027.
In a clear signal of commitment to this business, BASF Agricultural Solutions is investing €40 million to modernize its seed infrastructure. The project at its Nunhem, Netherlands headquarters involves upgrading existing facilities and building new capacity for more efficient seed storage and packaging. Construction is slated to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with completion expected by the end of 2028. This global business, which brings dozens of new vegetable varieties like tomatoes and carrots to market annually, is being prepared for an independent future.
While the agricultural unit is being readied for separation, other specialty segments are garnering recognition. At the recent in-cosmetics Global event in Paris, BASF's personal care business secured three industry awards. These included two BSB Innovation Awards, with one for its Aloversil ingredient—derived from upcycled sea buckthorn pomace and targeting hair loss—taking second place in the naturals category. Furthermore, the SpecialChem platform named BASF its most preferred supplier for the second consecutive year, a title based on global user searches and interactions.
The company is emphasizing sustainable solutions in this arena, showcasing a UV filter with a reduced CO₂ footprint at the Paris event. In May, BASF will shift focus to packaging innovation at the interpack trade fair in Düsseldorf, where it will present material solutions designed for recyclability that align with new EU packaging regulations.
The confluence of strategic execution, innovation accolades, and fundamental economic pressures sets the stage for April 30. The quarterly figures will serve as a crucial health check for 2026, while the dividend vote and progress on the agribusiness spin-off will signal shareholder support for the board's roadmap.
