A wave of downward revisions from major financial institutions is putting pressure on Procter & Gamble (P&G) shares. The adjustments come just days before the consumer goods behemoth is scheduled to release its quarterly results, casting a shadow over near-term performance expectations.

Widespread Price Target Reductions

The latest cautionary note was issued by UBS on January 14. Analyst Peter Grom lowered the firm's price target to $161 from $176, marking an 8.5% reduction. Despite this cut, UBS maintained its "Buy" rating on the stock. This move aligns with a broader trend of reassessment among Wall Street analysts:

  • TD Cowen took action earlier in January, slashing its target from $168 to $150—a 10.7% decrease. The firm cited a "challenging" year ahead for major consumer packaged goods companies, noting that volume growth is unlikely to see meaningful improvement.
  • Wells Fargo reduced its target from $170 to $158.
  • Goldman Sachs made a minor adjustment, moving from $160 to $159, while reiterating a "Neutral" stance.

Despite the recent cuts, the overall analyst consensus remains favorable. Of 25 covering analysts, 15 recommend buying the shares, while 10 advise holding. The average price target now stands at approximately $168.55, which still implies a potential upside of around 15% from current trading levels.

Q2 FY 2026 Earnings Preview: Modest Expectations

All eyes are on P&G’s upcoming report for its second fiscal quarter of 2026, due on Thursday, January 22. Consensus estimates point to a mixed performance:

  • Earnings Per Share (EPS): $1.87, compared to $1.88 in the prior-year period, representing a slight decline of 0.5%.
  • Revenue: Projected at $22.36 billion, a 2.2% increase from $21.88 billion a year ago.

This follows a stronger-than-expected first quarter, where the company posted adjusted EPS of $1.99 against estimates of $1.90 and revenue of $22.39 billion versus forecasts of $22.23 billion. For the full 2026 fiscal year, P&G’s own guidance forecasts EPS in the range of $6.83 to $7.10. However, analysts like those at TD Cowen warn that persistent negative volume growth across the industry and diminishing pricing power present significant headwinds.

Dividend Aristocrat Status Holds Firm

Amid the stock's weakness, P&G’s commitment to shareholder returns remains unwavering. On January 13, the board declared a quarterly dividend of $1.0568 per share, payable on February 17. This announcement extends the company’s remarkable track record to 135 consecutive years of dividend payments and 69 years of consecutive annual dividend increases.

The current dividend yield is approximately 2.9%, with a payout ratio around 61.75%. In a separate notice, the company recently warned shareholders about a mini-tender offer from Potemkin Limited, which sought to buy shares at $100 each—a price roughly 31% below the prevailing market value.

Strategic Shift Under New Leadership

A corporate restructuring is underway under the direction of new CEO Shailesh Jejurikar, who assumed the role in late 2025. The plan involves eliminating 7,000 office-based positions globally, with the savings being redirected toward product innovation and improvement initiatives. This strategic pivot is a direct response to stagnating sales growth and intensifying competitive pressures within the consumer goods sector.

The upcoming quarterly results will provide the first significant data point on whether these initial measures are gaining traction. Market participants will scrutinize key metrics, particularly organic sales growth and margin progression, to see if P&G can continue its recent streak of positive earnings surprises.
