BYD's Global Ambitions Face a Critical Profitability Test

The milestone was symbolic: the 16-millionth new energy vehicle rolling off the line at the Changsha plant on April 17, 2026, was a premium Denza D9. Yet this achievement underscores a pivotal moment for BYD, as the company's breakneck global expansion collides with a sustained slowdown in its home market. The upcoming quarterly report on April 28 will reveal whether booming international sales can sufficiently offset domestic pressures to protect the bottom line.

International deliveries are surging, providing a powerful counterweight to weakness in China. Overseas sales jumped approximately 65% year-over-year in March, exceeding 120,000 units. This momentum has prompted management to raise its 2026 export target to 1.5 million vehicles. A notable success story is unfolding in the UK, where BYD secured nearly a 4% market share for electric and hybrid vehicles last quarter, registering over 21,000 new vehicles.

This overseas push is being backed by massive infrastructure investment. The company recently activated its 5,000th fast-charging station in China, with an ambitious plan to operate 20,000 ultra-fast charging stations nationwide by the end of 2026. The European charging network is also set for rapid growth, with 3,000 ultra-fast chargers planned within the next twelve months. Production is commencing on a new Hungarian factory, with a second plant in Turkey scheduled to open before year-end.

These capital expenditures are fueled by relentless spending on research and development. In 2025 alone, BYD invested over 63 billion yuan in R&D, bringing its cumulative expenditure past the 240 billion yuan mark. This investment fuels technologies like its second-generation Blade battery and advanced driver-assistance systems that continuously learn from real-world driving data.

The domestic picture, however, presents a stark contrast. While monthly sales in China rebounded sequentially in March, they remain down by over 20% compared to the same period last year. This marks the seventh consecutive month of year-on-year decline for home market deliveries, signaling a clear cooling of the long-running growth cycle.

Analysts are closely watching how this split reality affects profitability. The consensus among experts remains broadly positive, with nearly all recommending a buy. The average price target for BYD's Hong Kong-listed shares, currently trading around HK$113 with a market capitalization of approximately one trillion Hong Kong dollars, stands at about HK$126. Views differ on the degree of optimism: Daiwa Securities recently trimmed its target slightly to HK$130, citing the weaker home market, while Citigroup maintains a significantly more bullish outlook with a HK$174 target.

The first-quarter results will deliver the hard numbers. Last year, despite record revenue, BYD's net profit fell by 19%, a direct result of fierce price competition in China. The key question for investors is whether the margin from its robust international deliveries—including premium models like the Denza D9, which commands up to 489,800 yuan in China—can now cushion the domestic profit squeeze and provide fresh momentum for the stock.
