Deutsche Telekom’s Transatlantic Tightrope: Mega-Merger Talk Meets a Bruised Chart

Deutsche Telekom Aktie

The coming days will test Deutsche Telekom’s narrative on both sides of the Atlantic, as a pivotal earnings release from its US jewel collides with mounting speculation over a full-blown takeover of the very same subsidiary. The stock, already nursing a near-7% weekly loss, closed Friday at €27.61, well below its 200-day moving average of roughly €29.50. That technical breach has sharpened the focus on the next major floor: the year’s low of €26.45.

T-Mobile US Earnings as the Catalyst

All eyes turn to Tuesday evening, when T-Mobile US reports its quarterly results. The American arm contributes the lion’s share of group operating profit and accounts for roughly two-thirds of Deutsche Telekom’s market value. With Bonn holding just under 53% of the shares, these numbers will set the tone for the parent company’s own report on May 13.

Management in Bonn has set a full-year operating profit target of €47.4 billion, with the European core business under pressure to show it can match the momentum of its US counterpart. A share buyback program of up to €550 million is currently underway, running until the end of June, part of a planned annual volume of up to €2 billion. The dividend target for 2026 stands at around €2.20 per share.

The Merger Spectre

Yet the earnings are playing second fiddle to a far more existential question. Reports have emerged that CEO Timotheus Höttges is weighing a full integration of T-Mobile US, moving from the current 53% stake to outright control. The logic is strategic: direct access to the US cash flows would be transformative. But the market is recoiling at the sheer financial heft required.

The uncertainty has left deep scars on the chart. The stock now trades nearly 13% below its 50-day moving average. Analysts are divided: the prospect of a mega-deal dangles the promise of future earnings growth, but the immediate financing burden and the risk of a stretched combined valuation are triggering defensive selling.

Political hurdles add another layer. Any transaction of this scale would need approval from both Berlin and Washington. The current US administration under Donald Trump is seen as open to large telecom mergers, but the regulatory path remains far from clear.

Home Front: Calm on Regulation, Strain on the Chart

On the domestic front, a recent regulatory change has caused little concern. Germany’s Bundesnetzagentur has activated a right for mobile customers to reduce their bills if they can prove persistently poor reception using an official measurement app. For Deutsche Telekom, the impact is minimal: its networks cover nearly 93% of Germany’s land area with 4G, leaving the management unfazed.

The technical picture, however, is less forgiving. Until the stock reclaims the 200-day line at €29.48, the downtrend remains firmly in control. The next support level to watch is the year’s low at €26.45.

Beyond the Noise: Quantum Steps and Fiber Build-Out

Away from the merger chatter, Deutsche Telekom is making quiet but significant technological strides. In Berlin, the group demonstrated quantum teleportation under real-world conditions in its existing fiber network — a step toward a tamper-proof quantum internet. Meanwhile, its GlasfaserPlus subsidiary is pushing ahead with new fiber projects in Bavaria.

In the US, T-Mobile is investing heavily in fiber-replacement products and refining its service app, even as competition intensifies. Rivals like AT&T have secured key spectrum blocks, adding to the pressure in an already crowded market.

What to Watch

This week, the market will be parsing T-Mobile US’s results for clues on the health of the US business and, by extension, the logic of a full takeover. Until Bonn issues an official statement on the integration rumors, speculation over the financing structure will continue to weigh on the stock. Earnings from US peers will also provide fresh data points on the competitive landscape.

For now, Deutsche Telekom finds itself caught between two powerful forces: the allure of a transformative US deal and the cold reality of a stock that has lost its technical footing. The next few sessions will reveal which force wins out.
