Amazon's Dual Engine: A $33 Billion AI Bet and a Healthcare Onslaught

Amazon is flexing its corporate muscle on two distinct fronts, committing unprecedented capital to artificial intelligence while simultaneously launching a direct assault on the telehealth market. The tech giant's latest moves underscore a strategy of aggressive expansion into high-growth sectors, from cloud infrastructure to chronic care management.
The company has cemented a landmark partnership with AI startup Anthropic, structuring a deal of staggering scale. Amazon has agreed to invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic, with a portion flowing immediately. This fresh capital values the developer of the Claude models at $380 billion. When combined with earlier funding rounds, Amazon's total potential investment climbs to $33 billion. In return, Anthropic has committed to purchasing over $100 billion worth of cloud services from Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next decade. The partnership is deeply technical, with Anthropic integrating its platform into AWS and planning to leverage Amazon's proprietary Trainium chips heavily, with nearly a gigawatt of new capacity coming online this year.
This AI offensive coincides with a major push into the lucrative weight-loss drug market. Through its One Medical service, Amazon unveiled a national GLP-1 Management Program on April 21. The program treats obesity as a chronic condition, bundling virtual and in-person consultations, ongoing lab work, and therapy adjustments. Amazon Pharmacy handles delivery, offering medications like Wegovy, Zepbound, and the newly FDA-approved oral drug Foundayo. Prices start at $25 per month with insurance or $149 without, while injections are available from $299. The company is leveraging its logistics network, offering same-day delivery in nearly 3,000 cities, with plans to expand to 4,500 by late 2026.
The market reaction to the healthcare move was swift. Shares of telehealth provider Hims & Hers Health fell roughly six percent on the news. Other stocks with exposure to obesity medications, including Viking Therapeutics, Amgen, and Septerna, also declined. The pressure on direct telehealth providers intensifies as the FDA recently restricted the mass production of compounded semaglutide, closing a loophole for cheaper alternatives. Amazon's entry follows a similar platform announcement from Walmart, signaling an escalation of competition among major retailers for weight-management patients.
Investors have responded positively to Amazon's expansive vision. The stock currently trades around 216.00 Euros, having gained approximately 19 percent in the last 30 days and sitting just below its 52-week high. Since the start of the year, the equity is up about eleven percent.
However, legal challenges persist. In Florida, Miami-Dade County voted unanimously for enforcement measures after Amazon temporarily closed a warehouse near Homestead. A 2020 jobs agreement stipulates a penalty of $8,000 per missing job; with 616 positions affected, fines could reach $2.6 million. Amazon states the closure is temporary for a remodel and that over 300 employees have accepted transfers within the county. Separately, California's attorney general is seeking a preliminary injunction against Amazon over allegedly illegal pricing mandates for sellers on rival platforms, with a hearing set for July and a trial beginning in 2027.
All strategic moves now lead to a key date: April 29, when Amazon reports first-quarter 2026 results. Analysts will scrutinize whether AWS can maintain its momentum after posting 24 percent growth last quarter, its strongest increase in 13 quarters. Bank of America expects AWS revenue to rise 28 percent, above the market consensus of 25 percent. The earnings report will serve as a critical test for both the financial impact of the massive AI infrastructure build-out and the early market reception to its healthcare ambitions.
