Strategy, the global leader in institutional Bitcoin holdings, has significantly expanded its position with a fresh multi-billion dollar purchase. This aggressive accumulation strategy, however, comes with a substantial cost: the company's total cryptocurrency portfolio has now slid deep into unrealized losses.
A Major Purchase Executed
According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Strategy acquired 22,337 Bitcoin between March 9 and March 15, 2026. The total outlay for this transaction was approximately $1.57 billion, resulting in an average purchase price of $70,194 per coin. This latest acquisition brings Strategy’s total Bitcoin treasury to 761,068 coins, representing over 3.5% of the world’s available supply.
The downside of this strategy is evident when examining the company's overall cost basis. The average price paid for its entire Bitcoin holdings stands at $75,696. With the current market price lower, Strategy is sitting on roughly $1.6 billion in unrealized book losses.
Funding Through Equity Markets
To finance this substantial purchase, Strategy tapped the equity markets extensively. Nearly 75% of the funding—about $1.18 billion—was raised through the sale of close to 12 million preferred shares. An additional $396 million flowed into company coffers from the issuance of common stock.
For future acquisitions, management retains access to more than $8 billion from existing share programs, providing ample dry powder for continued buying.
The Road to One Million Bitcoin
These transactions are a core component of Strategy's internal capital plan, which has a clearly defined objective: to amass one million Bitcoin before the end of the year. Despite the significant paper losses, the market reacted positively to the company's steadfast commitment to this plan. Strategy's shares gained 3.60% on the day, trading at 126.60 euros. This gain occurs even as the stock remains down nearly 53% over a 12-month period.
Achieving its stated year-end goal will require a sustained purchasing pace. Strategy must acquire an average of 6,158 coins per week over the remaining 42 weeks of the year. At current market conditions, funding this volume would require approximately $22.2 billion, implying a continuous placement of additional shares to the market.
