While a wave of selling grips the software sector, the leadership at ServiceNow is demonstrating notable conviction. CEO Bill McDermott has made significant personal investments in the company's shares, a move that stands in stark contrast to the broader market's fear-driven sentiment triggered by a new AI development.
Sector Disruption Fears Fuel Sell-Off
The immediate catalyst for the recent downturn is an update to Anthropic's AI chatbot, Claude. The enhanced software now possesses the capability to remotely control computers, launch applications, and populate data fields on a smartphone's command. This advancement has ignited market concerns that such intelligent AI agents could render traditional workflow processes—and the software built around them—obsolete.
In this tense environment, ServiceNow shares declined by nearly six percent on Tuesday, closing at $104.65. This performance was markedly weaker than the broader market. Since reaching its peak in December 2024, the stock has shed approximately 60 percent of its value. Competitors, including Salesforce, have also been caught in the pronounced downdraft following Anthropic's announcement.
Operational Strength and Insider Buying
Despite the pessimistic backdrop, CEO Bill McDermott's actions speak volumes. In late February, he purchased company stock on the open market at prices between $104 and $106 per share. Operationally, ServiceNow continues to show robust health. The company's remaining performance obligation (RPO), which represents contracted revenue not yet recognized, surged by 25 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter to reach $12.85 billion.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ServiceNow?
Further bolstering confidence, the board of directors has authorized a new share repurchase program worth $5 billion. It is worth noting, however, that even after the significant price correction, the valuation remains elevated with a GAAP-based price-to-earnings ratio of 63. The current sell-off, therefore, appears to reflect a compression of previously high valuation premiums in the face of new AI competition rather than a deterioration of fundamental business metrics.
Upcoming Catalysts on the Horizon
The coming weeks present ServiceNow with key opportunities to reaffirm its operational momentum. First-quarter results are scheduled for release on April 29th. Market experts, on average, anticipate a revenue jump of over 21 percent to $3.75 billion, with earnings projected at $0.95 per share.
Shortly thereafter, from May 5th to 7th, the company will host its annual "Knowledge 2026" conference in Las Vegas. This event, expected to draw more than 15,000 attendees, will serve as a platform for ServiceNow to unveil its strategic response to the evolving technological landscape. The spotlight will be on new offerings such as its proprietary "AI Agents" and the "AI Control Tower," solutions designed to defend its market position against emerging AI startups.
