Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has significantly bolstered its presence in a key Asian market, announcing a series of strategic agreements in South Korea over a short period. These deals, spanning cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and memory supply, illustrate a coordinated effort to expand the company's influence in the region.
Securing Critical Memory Supply
The foundation for this strategic push was laid on March 18 with a memorandum of understanding signed between AMD and Samsung Electronics. The agreement was formalized at Samsung's chip fabrication plant in Pyeongtaek. Its core component designates Samsung as the primary supplier of next-generation HBM4 memory for AMD's upcoming Instinct MI455X accelerators. The partnership also extends to providing DDR5 solutions for AMD's sixth-generation EPYC server processors, codenamed "Venice," and the AMD Helios platform, ensuring a streamlined supply chain for critical components.
Expanding AI and Cloud Footprint
On March 19, AMD revealed a strategic collaboration with NAVER Cloud, the cloud computing division of the South Korean internet conglomerate. This alliance will see NAVER Cloud deploy AMD EPYC processors at scale, including the forthcoming "Venice" generation. Furthermore, NAVER Cloud has secured early access to AMD's next-generation Instinct MI455X GPUs for its cloud and production environments. The partnership is deepened by joint development work on NAVER's AI software stacks, which will be optimized using AMD's ROCm open software platform.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AMD?
Concurrently, AMD is extending its collaboration with the Korean AI research lab Upstage. Upstage intends to deploy AMD Instinct MI355 GPUs over the coming year to power its large language models and document processing systems. This cooperation is linked to a government-backed initiative aimed at advancing sovereign AI model development within Korea.
High-Level Government Engagement
AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su's visit to Seoul included discussions with Korean policymakers focused on AI. Central to these talks was the "K-Moonshot" initiative, a national government program targeting the application of AI to address key societal challenges by 2035. The dialogue between Su and Korean officials covered potential joint research projects and initiatives to cultivate local AI software talent, signaling AMD's intent to build a multifaceted relationship that extends beyond hardware supply.
Through these moves—securing advanced memory supply, forging new software and cloud alliances, and engaging directly with national AI programs—AMD has substantially reinforced its strategic standing in the Korean market this week.
