iShares MSCI World ETF: A Critical Week Precedes a Radical Reshuffle

The iShares MSCI World ETF (URTH) faces a defining week, with its near-term performance hinging on a single corporate report. On April 29, Microsoft, which holds a 3.44% weight in the fund, will release its quarterly earnings. The results will test the momentum of the ETF’s recent gains, especially after analysts at TD Cowen recently reaffirmed their buy rating but trimmed their price target to $540, citing GPU infrastructure capacity constraints. Microsoft’s previous quarter showed robust 17% revenue growth, with its Azure cloud unit surging 39%.
This focus on a single stock underscores a fundamental vulnerability in the fund’s construction: extreme concentration. Technology stocks account for over 26% of the portfolio, with just three names—Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft—making up a combined 13.6%. Apple and Microsoft alone represent nearly 8% of the fund’s total weight. While this concentration has driven returns, it also means the ETF’s trajectory is disproportionately tied to the fortunes of a handful of U.S. tech giants.
The broader earnings season has, however, started on a strong note. Banking giants reported stellar results, with JPMorgan Chase posting a record trading revenue of $11.6 billion, Goldman Sachs achieving $17.23 billion in revenue, and Morgan Stanley boosting its profit by 29%. According to FactSet, the S&P 500 is on track for its sixth consecutive quarter of double-digit earnings growth, which would be the longest such streak in over a decade.
Beyond the immediate earnings focus, a far more significant structural change looms on the horizon. In May 2026, index provider MSCI will implement a new three-tier free-float classification system. This technical adjustment is expected to force substantial portfolio realignments within the ETF. Analysts anticipate significantly larger shifts than during the last rebalancing in March, which saw a net departure of just nine securities. Mega-cap technology stocks, including Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet, could see notable weight adjustments as a result of the revised methodology.
The fund’s manager, BlackRock, must execute these mandated changes with precision. Any tracking error during this complex reweighting could compound existing pressure from competitors. Rival Invesco has slashed fees for comparable products to as low as 0.05%, directly challenging the iShares ETF’s expense ratio of 0.24%. BlackRock argues its product justifies the premium with a tight tracking difference of just 0.02%, an argument that appears to resonate with some institutional investors. The Royal Bank of Canada recently increased its position by 17.5% to approximately two million shares.
Additional sector-specific headwinds are emerging. The U.S. government has announced punitive tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals, set to take effect in late July 2026, with rates of up to 100% for manufacturers without U.S. pricing agreements. This poses a margin risk for the healthcare sector, which constitutes 9.45% of the URTH portfolio.
For income-focused shareholders, the next key date is the ex-dividend day on June 15, 2026, following a year of dividend growth exceeding 20%. Meanwhile, the technology sector’s valuation premium has receded, with its forward P/E ratio at the lowest level since mid-2020. Analysts project sector earnings growth of 43% for 2026, a significant acceleration from 26% the prior year, offering a fundamental counterpoint to the concentration and regulatory risks. The week ahead will reveal whether near-term corporate strength can solidify the foundation for the fund’s longer-term transformation.
