Microsoft's Valuation Discount Meets a Critical Earnings Test

Microsoft Aktie

Microsoft shares are staging a powerful rebound, surging nearly 14% over the past week to close at 359.55 EUR. This rally sets the stage for a pivotal financial report on April 29th, where the company's massive AI investments will face a crucial reality check.

A striking paradox defines the current investment thesis. Despite the recent advance, Microsoft's stock trades at a valuation not seen in years. At 23 times earnings, it is now cheaper than the S&P 500, which commands a multiple of 24.5. Rivals Alphabet and Apple are priced at 29 and 33 times earnings, respectively. Measured by operating profit, Microsoft hasn't been this inexpensive since 2017, a period preceding both the pandemic crash and the 2022 tech selloff. This discount persists even as the company's fundamentals have strengthened; revenue in the last quarter jumped 17% to $81.3 billion, with adjusted earnings per share soaring 24%.

The core investor concern is clear: will the billions poured into artificial intelligence ever translate into proportional revenue growth? The recent stock decline has been deeper than during the 2022 bear market, despite significantly higher sales since then. All eyes are now on the Intelligent Cloud segment, particularly the Azure cloud platform, which grew 39% last quarter. Wall Street anticipates 16% overall revenue growth for the upcoming Q3 FY2026 report, with Azure expected to remain the primary engine.

Analyst sentiment provides a counterpoint to the prevailing skepticism. Bernstein's Mark Moerdler offers the strongest rebuttal, framing the investment-revenue gap as a timing issue rather than a structural flaw. He expects Azure growth to accelerate in the third fiscal quarter and remain robust in the fourth, maintaining an "Outperform" rating with a $641 price target. Of the 37 analysts covering the stock, only three recommend holding. The average price target implies roughly 47% upside potential, though some have tempered expectations. BNP Paribas recently trimmed its target to $556 from $659, citing higher capital expenditures and the initial use of new AI capacity for internal workloads.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?

Technically, the picture is mixed. The weekly gain of 13.82% is impressive, with the stock adding over 6% across Wednesday and Thursday alone. Since hitting a 52-week low in late March, shares have recovered nearly 16%. However, significant hurdles remain. The stock is still down almost 11% year-to-date and trades about 11% below its 200-day moving average, near 405 EUR. It has also closed below its 200-week line for three consecutive weeks—a level not breached in over 13 years. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) sits at a neutral 46.7, suggesting room for further gains if the earnings report delivers positive surprises.

Beyond AI, Microsoft has signaled priorities in security and shareholder returns. The company disbursed $2.3 million through its "Zero Day Quest 2026" program, a security research initiative designed to systematically identify vulnerabilities in its cloud infrastructure. In March, the board approved the next quarterly dividend, affirming its commitment to consistent capital returns.

The upcoming report from CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood will be decisive. The market seeks confirmation that innovations like the new "MAI-Image-2-Efficient" model—claimed to be 40% faster than leading rivals—are beginning to bolster margins. A renewed outlook for accelerated cloud expansion would likely impact the share price more profoundly than any recent analyst commentary. For now, the stock approaches its earnings date with technical momentum, a historic valuation discount, and immense pressure to prove its AI strategy is on track.
