Heidelberg Materials Powers Up Green Transition on Two Fronts

Heidelberg Materials is advancing its decarbonization strategy with significant operational milestones in both France and the United Kingdom, even as its share price continues to navigate a challenging year.

In a quiet corner of the French countryside, a new rotary kiln has been fired up for the first time. After nearly 1,289 days of construction, Heidelberg Materials has produced its first clinker at the modernized Airvault plant, a project central to the group's climate roadmap. The overhaul is substantial, requiring tens of thousands of tons of steel and concrete. The site is now poised to run on 90% alternative fuels, drastically cutting fossil fuel consumption, and is slated for future integration into a carbon capture and storage scheme.

Across the Channel, the company is tackling emissions from a different angle. On April 20, Heidelberg Materials UK commissioned the first electric shunting locomotive at a British quarry. Dubbed "Battery Bill," the Class 08e locomotive was converted from an old diesel shunter by the firm Positive Traction. Its six Powerpod battery packs, with a total capacity of 600 kWh, deliver up to 50% more tractive power than the original diesel engine. During testing, the prototype successfully handled 1,000-tonne aggregate trains on the internal rail network of the Whatley quarry in Somerset.

This rail-based approach at Whatley reduces truck usage for supplying construction projects in London and Southeast England. The locomotive is a tangible component of the group's broader goal to cut transport-related CO₂ emissions by 15% by 2030, on the path to full carbon neutrality by 2050. In the UK, this effort complements other initiatives like hydrogen asphalt trials at the Criggion site.

Simultaneously, Heidelberg Materials is researching radical new binding agents to reduce the carbon footprint of its core product. A partnership with Swedish steelmaker SSAB, backed by approximately €1.7 million in Swedish state funding, aims to utilize electric arc furnace slag in cement production. The partners are testing the material at an industrial scale, with the potential to replace conventional clinker components on a large scale.

Financially, the company remains on solid operational footing. For the 2025 fiscal year, it reported a 6% increase in EBIT to €3.4 billion on revenue of €21.46 billion. Management has guided for an EBIT between €3.4 and €3.75 billion for 2026.

Yet, these strategic advances have yet to fully resonate with investors. The stock currently trades at €187.55. While it has recovered noticeably from a 52-week low of €160.45 hit in March, it remains nearly 16% down since the start of the year and is hovering around its 50-day moving average.

The final commissioning of the Airvault facility, with test runs concluding in the coming months, will be a key near-term focus. Through these parallel investments in cleaner production and logistics, Heidelberg Materials is building an early-mover position ahead of tightening European emissions regulations.
