A wave of profit-taking has swept through Micron Technology's stock, pulling shares back from recent record highs despite the company reporting some of the strongest operational metrics in its history. The sell-off, which saw the stock fall around five percent mid-week, underscores a market recalibrating after a staggering 12-month rally exceeding 530 percent.
The immediate catalyst for the pullback appears twofold. First, sector-wide caution emerged following quarterly results from Dutch chip equipment giant ASML. While ASML met expectations with Q1 net sales of €8.8 billion and a net profit of €2.8 billion, its shares dipped on investor concerns over stricter export controls to China and a lack of a more bullish outlook. As a critical supplier of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines needed for advanced memory production, ASML's fortunes are closely tied to Micron's own expansion plans for High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM).
Second, a significant insider transaction amplified the downward pressure. Chief Business Officer Sumit Sadana sold 24,000 shares on April 10 at an average price of $421.35, a transaction worth over $10 million. Such sales are not uncommon following a historic run but provided a concrete signal for some investors to lock in gains.
Beneath the stock's volatility, Micron's business fundamentals have never been stronger. The insatiable demand for HBM used in AI data centers has led to an unprecedented capacity crunch. The company has already sold out its entire HBM production capacity through the end of calendar year 2026 via binding contracts. This visibility is turbocharging profitability. In its fiscal second quarter, Micron achieved a gross margin of 74.9 percent. Management is targeting approximately 81 percent for the third quarter, driven by the superior pricing of its new HBM3E memory compared to standard DDR5 chips.
The production pipeline is accelerating to meet this demand. Mass production of the next-generation HBM4 has already begun, with initial customer shipments starting ahead of the original schedule. This positions Micron to supply upcoming AI platforms like Nvidia's Vera Rubin architecture. Concurrently, the ramp of its new 1-gamma DRAM node is underway to support supply into 2026.
From a technical perspective, the stock appears to be entering a consolidation phase after its steep ascent. In US trading, key support levels are viewed at $444.27 and $413.77. For the euro-denominated share, currently trading at €383.90, the 50-day moving average at €347.83 is seen as a crucial medium-term support level. The company also recently distributed its regular quarterly dividend of $0.15 per share on April 15, marking a 30 percent increase from the previous payout.
The current share price weakness primarily reflects portfolio repositioning after an extraordinary rally. Operationally, Micron is running at full throttle. As long as capacity in the AI memory market remains this tight, the company's record-breaking margins provide a formidable foundation.
