ASML Holding NV has reinforced its position as the indispensable leader in advanced chipmaking equipment with a significant technological advancement. The Dutch company announced a major upgrade to its extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems, a development set to dramatically enhance semiconductor manufacturing efficiency worldwide.
A Power Surge for Chip Production
The core of this breakthrough is a new, more powerful light source for ASML's highly complex lithography machines. The updated system delivers a stable 1,000 watts of power, a substantial increase from the previous 600-watt standard. According to Chief Technology Officer Michael Purvis, this is not merely a laboratory prototype but a system ready for rigorous, high-volume deployment at customer facilities.
For leading chip manufacturers—including TSMC, Intel, and Samsung—this translates directly into higher production output within the same timeframe. The innovation is projected to increase the throughput of these machines from approximately 220 wafers per hour today to around 330 wafers per hour by 2030. This represents a 50 percent capacity boost, which is expected to lower the per-chip production cost for foundries.
Strategic Timing Amid an AI Boom
This leap forward arrives at a pivotal moment for the industry. The global surge in artificial intelligence development continues to fuel unprecedented demand for computing power and, consequently, the most advanced semiconductors. As the sole global manufacturer of these critical EUV machines, ASML's latest progress further widens its formidable competitive moat.
The company's operational strength is mirrored in its financials. ASML concluded 2025 with a massive order backlog valued at roughly €38.8 billion. The market has rewarded this unique market position: the company's shares reached a new all-time high of €1,275 in recent trading and have appreciated more than 80 percent over the past twelve months.
With a clear technology roadmap that already envisions systems capable of 2,000 watts, ASML remains the undisputed technological pacesetter for the semiconductor sector. As long as the world's appetite for faster and more powerful processors grows, the industry will continue to rely on the advanced machinery produced in the Netherlands.
