The leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea signed a “joint declaration of peace and friendship”, Eritrea’s information minister said, a day after a landmark summit marked a start to normalization of ties between the longtime foes.
“The Agreement, which specifies five pillars, was signed this morning at State House by President Isaias Afwerki and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed,” Minister Yemane Gebremeskel wrote on Twitter on Monday alongside a photo of the two men seated at a table in front of their nations’ flags.
The first of the five pillars stated that the war that existed between the two countries has ended.
Other pillars declared that a new era of peace and friendship has been ushered and that both countries will work to promote close cooperation in political, economic, social, cultural and security areas.

UN to lift sanctions on Eritrea after US shift
The UN Security Council is preparing to lift sanctions on Eritrea after the United States dropped its insistence on prolonging the measures despite a peace deal with Ethiopia, diplomats said Friday.
Britain circulated a draft resolution to the council on Thursday that calls for lifting the arms embargo and all travel bans, asset freezes and targeted sanctions on Eritrea, according to the text seen by AFP.
The council is to vote on the proposed resolution on November 14. Diplomats said they expected the measure to be adopted after the US change in position.

Der UNO-Sicherheitsrat hat alle Sanktionen gegen Eritrea aufgehoben.
Eine dazu von Großbritannien eingebrachte Resolution wurde einstimmig angenommen. Ein Waffenembargo sowie finanzielle Sanktionen und Reiseverbote waren seit dem Jahr 2009 in Kraft.
Mit der Aufhebung der Sanktionen reagiert der Sicherheitsrat unter anderem darauf, dass der Grenzkonflikt zwischen Eritrea und Äthiopien im vergangenen Jahr friedlich beigelegt wurde. Eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem ebenfalls benachbarten Djibouti solle zügig beendet werden, heißt es in der Resolution. Der Sicherheitsrat will sich künftig halbjährlich über Fortschritte informieren lassen.

“Given that we’re in Africa, if you were to take a market that is a specialist in funding African projects then that is probably London,” says Cornelius regarding Danakali’s recent AIM-listing. He continues, “getting the debt now with $200 million under the mandate letter, that helps us as well. “Where we are in terms of the project is we are shovel-ready, so as soon as we secure the full funding we will start construction – the construction will take two years and then we’ll be in production [in] 2021.”
