Nel ASA's Strategic Pivot Faces Financial Reality Check in Q1 Report

Investors in Norwegian hydrogen specialist Nel ASA are bracing for a pivotal moment this Wednesday. The company is set to release its first-quarter 2026 figures, a report that will test whether a recent management overhaul can translate a bulging order book into tangible revenue. The stock, trading at 0.23 EUR, has warmed up with a gain of roughly 20% over the past month, setting the stage for a high-stakes financial update.
At the heart of Nel's challenge is a glaring operational disconnect. While order intake surged by 364% in the final quarter of 2025, driven by a major PEM electrolyzer contract, revenue from customer contracts collapsed by 20% in the same period. This explosion in orders pushed the order backlog to over NOK 1.3 billion, but the subsequent revenue decline left the company with an operating EBITDA loss of NOK 36 million. The immediate task for management is to demonstrate a clear path for converting this backlog into countable income.
Ahead of the numbers, the company's leadership has initiated a significant internal shift. Shareholders recently approved a fundamental restructuring of executive compensation. CEO Håkon Volldal and CFO Kjell Christian Bjørnsen have voluntarily surrendered their old stock options in favor of Performance Share Units (PSUs). These new awards are directly tied to measurable corporate performance targets over three years, a move designed to align management's incentives more closely with operational success.
The company's financial resilience is currently underpinned by a solid liquidity buffer of approximately NOK 1.6 billion. However, this cushion faces a dual test. Analysts are keenly awaiting details on potential write-downs related to two idled production lines at the Herøya facility. Furthermore, the market demands clarity on the timeline for revenue recognition from the late-2025 order surge.
Long-term prospects are heavily tied to a technological bet. Nel is banking on its new Pressurized Alkaline electrolyzer platform, which promises production costs up to 60% lower than current systems. Following successful testing, the commercial launch is slated for the first half of 2026, with large-scale deliveries expected from 2027. The European Union has pledged support for this industrialization, with grants of up to 135 million euros to cover a major portion of the investment for a planned annual capacity of four gigawatts.
Despite this strategic positioning, the analyst community remains cautious. Recent weeks have seen a series of target price reductions. Berenberg cut its target to NOK 2.30, Citigroup lowered its fair value estimate to NOK 2.40, and Morgan Stanley made a more drastic reduction to NOK 2.00. All three institutions maintain a "Hold" rating, citing unpredictable order flow and the unproven market success of the new technology platform.
Corporate alliances provide a note of stability. Major shareholder Samsung E&A, which holds just over nine percent of the shares, retains its influence after shareholders confirmed the supervisory board mandate of Gyuyeon Kang. The Korean plant builder plans to offer complete hydrogen plants featuring Nel's electrolyzers.
Management will present the quarterly results in a webcast at 08:00 CET on Wednesday. The report must deliver convincing signals that the strategic and compensation changes are more than just structural shifts, providing the necessary fuel for the stock's recent rally to be sustained.
