Shares of space infrastructure company Momentus traded sharply lower on Thursday, despite the firm announcing the completion of a significant NASA-backed feasibility study. The company has submitted its final technical report to the U.S. space agency, wrapping up an extensive analysis of solar sail technology for potential early-warning systems against solar storms.
A New Approach to Space Weather Monitoring
The core of the completed study focused on a concept for a solar sail measuring approximately 1,650 square meters—an area comparable to one-third of a soccer field. Developed in collaboration with NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the technology harnesses solar photons for propulsion. This method could enable satellites to be positioned closer to the sun without consuming traditional fuel, with the goal of detecting incoming geomagnetic storms earlier than current Earth-orbiting systems allow.
Momentus specifically evaluated how its modular Vigoride spacecraft platform could serve as the foundation for such a mission. The vehicle's design is intended to safely transport and operate these complex payloads in space.
Strategic Focus and Market Reaction
This partnership highlights Momentus's strategic emphasis on establishing itself within the commercial space sector through government-funded research initiatives. With the final report submitted in March 2026, the decision on the project's next phase now rests with NASA. The agency retains the option to advance the concept into an actual in-space flight demonstration under its Flight Opportunities program.
Investors, however, reacted cautiously to the news. The stock declined over seven percent during the trading session, closing at $3.94. This move brings the share price close to its recent 52-week low of $3.90, which was hit just days ago. The stock's annualized volatility, exceeding 80 percent, further underscores the sustained nervousness surrounding the sector.
The future of the solar sail project is now contingent on further evaluations and potential follow-on contracts from government agencies. A definitive timeline for a decision regarding an actual test mission has not yet been established.
