Microsoft's AI Strategy Shift: Bundling Premium Services to Drive Revenue

Microsoft is implementing a fundamental change in how it brings artificial intelligence to the market. Moving away from offering AI capabilities as standalone add-ons, the software giant is packaging them into a new, more expensive enterprise bundle. This strategic pivot aims to convert the company's massive recent infrastructure investments into predictable, recurring income streams.
Financial Performance and Market Context
Operationally, Microsoft's core business continues to show strength. Revenue for the second fiscal quarter grew by 17 percent. A key forward-looking indicator, the remaining performance obligation (RPO), which represents contracted revenue not yet recognized, surged by 110 percent to $625 billion. This significant jump points to robust future demand. However, this operational momentum has not been fully reflected in the company's share price. Since the start of the year, the stock has lost approximately 14 percent of its value, currently trading near €347.
The driving force behind the new pricing model is the urgent need to refinance substantial capital expenditures. In just the last two quarters, Microsoft directed $72 billion toward expanding its AI data center capacity. Currently, the company reports about 15 million paying users for its Copilot assistant. While this marks considerable growth year-over-year, it represents only a small fraction of Microsoft's total commercial 365 customer base of 450 million. The new bundled offering is designed to accelerate adoption and bridge this gap.
The New Enterprise Bundle: "Microsoft 365 E7"
On May 1, 2026, the company will launch "Microsoft 365 E7," its first new enterprise-tier subscription plan in a decade. Priced at $99 per user per month, this package carries a 65 percent premium over the current top-tier offering. It consolidates existing services, including the E5 suite, with the AI-powered Copilot assistant and the new Agent 365 platform.
Previously, businesses had to license Copilot separately. Under the new structure, the technology becomes a standard feature for customers on the highest-priced plan. Microsoft highlights a cost advantage, noting that purchasing the components individually would sum to $117. The introduction of Agent 365 also serves as a strategic move to counter increasing competition from software rivals like Salesforce and AI developers such as OpenAI and Anthropic, all of whom are vying for the same enterprise clients.
Investors and analysts will gain their first concrete insights into early demand and customer acceptance ahead of the E7 rollout when Microsoft releases its next quarterly report on April 28, 2026.
