Lynas Rare Earths Nears Full Heavy Rare Earths Capability with Billions in Backing

The strategic pivot by Lynas Rare Earths is gaining powerful momentum, backed by robust finances and key international partnerships. The Australian miner is accelerating the expansion of its Malaysian processing plant in Gebeng, aiming to establish a fully integrated supply chain for heavy rare earths independent of China. This drive is reflected in the company's soaring valuation, which reached approximately A$19.5 billion in early April, a surge of over 180% in one year.
Financially, the company is on solid ground to fund its ambitious plans. Following a successful capital raise, Lynas holds cash reserves exceeding A$1 billion. Its net profit for the first half of the 2026 financial year skyrocketed to A$82 million, a dramatic increase from A$5.9 million in the prior corresponding period. The stock recently hit a new 52-week high at €13.34 and has advanced nearly 86% since the start of the year.
A cornerstone of the strategy involves moving beyond simple extraction to master the most complex steps of the supply chain. Chief Operating Officer Pol Le Roux confirmed that Lynas has already demonstrated the extraction of dysprosium, terbium, and samarium—elements whose strategic importance intensified after China's 2025 export restrictions. The company is currently the only producer of separated dysprosium and terbium outside China. Detailed planning for a full-scale heavy rare earths separation facility is now underway, with a target to process every market-demanded element at Gebeng by the end of 2027, aiming for an annual capacity of up to 5,000 tonnes.
On the demand side, Lynas has secured its expansion with two major, state-backed offtake agreements. Both Japan Australia Rare Earths (JARE) and the U.S. Department of Defense guarantee a minimum price of US$110 per kilogram for neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) oxide. JARE has secured at least half of all heavy rare earths produced in Malaysia, while the Pentagon has adjusted its supply contract to this price floor and committed an additional US$96 million for purchases over the next four years.
Rather than building its own magnet factories, Lynas is pursuing strategic partnerships to complete the downstream value chain. The company has signed a framework agreement with LS Eco Energy, a subsidiary of LS Cable & System, to build a rare earth metals plant in Vietnam. This facility will convert Lynas's oxides into metallic form, a crucial material for permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and aerospace. The agreement includes a mutual subscription to convertible instruments worth approximately A$30 million each.
This period of aggressive growth coincides with a significant leadership transition. CEO Amanda Lacaze, who led the company for twelve years and grew its market capitalization from A$400 million to around A$15 billion, is set to step down at the end of the financial year in June. The board is conducting a global search for her successor as Lynas moves from a major investment phase into one of execution and delivery.
