The American food conglomerate General Mills is continuing its strategic overhaul of North American manufacturing operations. As part of this initiative, the company's facility in St. Charles, Missouri, is slated for permanent closure by the summer of 2026. The first wave of employee layoffs at the plant is scheduled for June 8.

A Strategic Capacity Adjustment

This move represents a targeted adjustment of production capacity within the company's North American retail segment. Management has deemed such steps necessary in response to a challenging consumer spending environment. According to a WARN notice filed with the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development, the employees impacted by the shutdown do not have the right to transfer to other General Mills plants.

Recent data underscores the pressure on the retail sector. While real sales showed a year-over-year increase of 1.3% in February 2026, they remained 0.4% below the peak level recorded in August 2025.

Shareholder Returns Offer a Counterpoint

Amidst this operational restructuring, General Mills continues to emphasize returns to its investors. The company has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.61 per share. Shareholders must own the stock by April 10, 2026 (the ex-dividend date) to be eligible for the payment, which will be distributed on May 1.

The current dividend yield stands at 6.48%. When combined with a share repurchase program that has reduced the share count by 5.2%, the total capital return to shareholders reaches 11.7%. The company maintains a payout ratio of approximately 60%, with a historical dividend growth rate of 3.1% per annum.

Quarterly Earnings Reveal Volatility

The company's recent profit performance has been inconsistent, highlighting the operational headwinds. For the third quarter of fiscal 2026, diluted earnings per share (EPS) came in at $0.56, a significant drop from the $1.13 reported in the same period the previous year.

This followed a similarly weak second quarter, where adjusted EPS of $0.78 fell short of the Q2 2025 result of $1.43. However, the first quarter of fiscal 2026 presented a stark contrast, with diluted EPS of $2.22 dramatically outperforming the prior year's $1.04. This outlier underscores the considerable quarter-to-quarter fluctuations in earnings.

The closure of the Missouri plant is a clear component of General Mills's broader efficiency drive.
