Trump To Nominate Elaine Chao As Transportation Secretary
WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - President-elect Donald Trump continued to pick potential members of his Cabinet on Tuesday, announcing his intent to nominate Elaine Chao to serve as Transportation Secretary.
Chao, who previously served as deputy Transportation Secretary under President George H.W. Bush and as Labor Secretary under President George W. Bush, is the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ken.
A statement from the Trump transition team said Chao would bring unparalleled experience and insight to the role of Transportation Secretary.
"Secretary Chao's extensive record of strong leadership and her expertise are invaluable assets in our mission to rebuild our infrastructure in a fiscally responsible manner," Trump said.
"She has an amazing life story and has helped countless Americans in her public service career," he added. "I am pleased to nominate Elaine as Secretary of the Department of Transportation."
Chao said she was honored to be nominated and praised Trump for outlining a clear vision to transform the country's infrastructure, accelerate economic growth and productivity, and create good paying jobs.
Suggesting that Chao's nomination could have support among Democrats, incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., praised her "long history of service to our country."
"Senate Democrats have said that if President-elect Trump is serious about a major infrastructure bill, backed by real dollars and not just tax credits and without cutting other programs like health care and education, that we are ready to work with his administration," Schumer said in a statement.
He added, "I hope Secretary Chao shares that ambitious goal and is willing to work with Democrats to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure and create millions of good paying jobs along the way."
Chao is the fourth woman Trump has nominated to a top position in his administration, joining South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley as U.N. Ambassador, charter school advocate Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary, and health policy consultant Seema Verma as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
